or truth. (and the commercials are not the only things that are trying to sell you something.)

people are making money off of your ignorance. don’t let them.

learn your body. teach your children what you learned. be a smart consumer. stop buying crap. thank you.

the very people charged with the responsibility of protecting you are deceiving you to meet their own greedy ends. when you really look- you will see this all around. American commerce is a battle ground. filled with false promises and smart marketing campaigns. and our t.v. generation is popping their pills. although the marketing lies perpetrated by the food industry are rampant, obesity or a case of diabetes is nothing compared to the loss of one’s mind. the pharmaceutical industry is raking in billions of dollars a year through the sale of mind-altering drugs. the FDA tell us that these drugs are safe and tested. but if you follow the money trail you will get a brand new perspective:

such committees consist of independent experts in the field and
exist to advise the FDA regarding safety, black box warnings, etc.

after being personally harmed by the psychiatric and pharmaceutical industries i took it upon myself to learn the truth behind their marketing. turn your t.v. to any station, open any popular magazine and you will find an ad for a mood-altering psychiatric drug. this is called “direct-to-consumer marketing” and it leads to self-diagnosis. if only the American consumer were smart enough to flip the page and read through the fine printed novel of side-effects on the other side. but alas, the American public is too trusting. if it is in a magazine it must be safe. if it’s on t.v. it’s got to be okay. well i’m here to set the record straight:

the widely advertised idea that mental illness is caused by a “chemical imbalance” in the brain is nothing more than an unproven theory. there is no diagnostic test which shows such an imbalance exists. this is pure marketing.

psychiatric drugs do not, as they claim, correct any chemical imbalance. the popular psychiatric drug ritalin is nothing more than a form of speed, highly addictive and dangerous.

psychiatry’s bible, the diagnostic and statistical manual, had 112 mental disorders outlined in it’s 1st issue. it’s latest issue now describes 374.

Homosexuality was formerly listed as a mental illness in the DSM. It was deleted when the idea became politically incorrect.

since there is no test to diagnose such “diseases” they are purely subjective.

new mental disorders are added to the dsm by nothing more than a vote.

according the the american psychiatric association 19 of the 27 psychiatrists on the dsm’s top voting panel have financial ties to the pharmaceutical industry.

psychiatric drugs pull in 80 billion dollars a year for the pharmaceutical industry.

i was a normal teenager, minding my own business, on my way to becoming a perfectly
obedient consumer… when something happened which would change my life forever.

my best friend disappeared off of the face of the earth for 2 whole weeks!

this was a boy i spoke to on the phone several times a day. he lived up north at college. and suddenly he was nowhere to be found. i must have left a hundred messages and sent a hundred texts. i tried him over and over every single day. it wasn’t until 2 weeks later that his phone finally rang and somebody answered.

i could hardly recognize the voice on the other end.

his speech was fast and confused. he stuttered. he couldn’t formulate a complete sentence. he went off the subject and blurted out nonsense. i kept repeating over and over again “where were you?! where have you been?!”. it took about 15 minutes to get my answer.

turns out my friend got into an argument with another boy on the campus basketball court, a girl watching from the crowd called the hospital psych ward, accused my friend of acting crazy and he got committed. just like that.

he was held for 2 weeks. he was placed on lithium. and now….. he really was crazy.

it only got worse after that. he stopped sleeping. he began calling me incessantly during the night, speaking only gibberish. i had to put my phone on silent and day after day i would wake to 50 or more missed calls. he starting becoming self destructive. he told me the drug made him want to die.

this is when i realized that something had to be done. i started researching lithium and it’s side effects. turns out mental depression and unusual excitement are side effects of the drug, as well as, confusion and lack of awareness. what???

i started reading the side effects of similar psychiatric drugs. I found
“suicidal thoughts or attempts” as a side effect to ritalin!

most of the conditions that were supposedly being treated by these drugs could also
be found in the drugs very own list of side effects!

agitation, anxiety, depression, irritability, persistent crying, unusual sadness,
aggression, hostility.. just to name a few!

my first thought? how could these drugs be approved by the FDA?

this was a question that would take me further than i ever could have imagined. and as for my friend? to put it simply, i never got him back.
